So I'm trying to figure out where I am going with my career/education and wanted to see if I could get some input from some fellow board members. I'm currently pursuing a Bachelors of Applied Science degree in Database Administration at the U of MN (College of Continuing Education). I've already worked as a network engineer/admin for a few years and found it not as challenging after a while (I don't have a degree for this, I learned on the job). I can choose from three concentrations: Database Administration, Network Administration or System Administration. I really want to be a DBA because it just seems like the most interesting career path of the three. Plus, I kind of feel like I won't really get bored of the job, and I want a career that will challenge me and that pays well.
I believe we have some DBA's on the board, so I wanted to ask those of you who are DBA's, how do you like your job and would you recommend it as a career choice? Also, I was looking at the national average for DBA salary and it is around 70-75k, is that accurate? I plan to finish my education with a Masters or an MBA. Just wanted to get some feedback from those who are already in the field or have had experience in the field. Thanks in advance.
