Is the difference in the Garret T3, the FP bolt on housing, and the Mitsu exhaust housing really that significant? If you could magically swap a different exhaust houing onto the same turbo, what kind of a difference would be present (spool, power)?

YES.

T3/T4 exhaust housings are your better choices due to the availability of different flow rates. This helps tune the turbo's spool rate and maximum HP potential to the engine/car.

The FP housing is well matched to the "optimum" flow a/r as determined by FP, whether it's correct or not as compared to the available T3/T4 housings is hard to say. Supposedly it falls in between the T3 .63 & T3 .82 housings. But the FP3053, FP3065 & FP3575 turbos seem to do really well.

It seems as if any other turbo with a Mitsu style housing is going to spool quicker, but have less HP potential due to the more restrictive exhaust flow.

Just remember lower a/r numbers = quicker spool-up with less HP potential and larger a/r numbers = slower spool-up with more HP potential.

Hope that helps. ;)

i would hope the FP housings work well. Lots of fast dudes running them.

plus they are just plain beautiful.

the FPs are .70-.74 T3, I think the .73 is after porting. The FPs are pretty to look at.

Ahh, thanks, that does help. I did have a basic understanding about the exhaust A/Rs, but how do the compressor A/Rs affect things? I thought the more important number on the compressor side is the diamater of the wheel ( i forgot if it was inducer or exducer) and for some reason it seems the diameter of the wheel has some relation to how much air (in lbs/min) a turbo can flow. (ie a 100mm wheel can flow about 100 lbs/min). Please set me straight if I'm wrong!
