My friends and I just finished a discussion and we have come to an agreement as to what the "best" car should be.

Main traits: AWD, inline6, turbo, CHEAP.
Secondary traits: Lightweight <3000lbs, coil-over suspension, needs downforce @ high speeds, needs to look cool (think connegzieg CCX, i know its not spelled right).

We have been bouncing back and forth over these specs for a while: FWD no way. RWD is cool, but we live in minnesota. so AWD won.

i4 motors are cool, but they really are small. V8s are heavy, hard to work on, they have pushrods (or if they are DOHC, they are $$$). So i6 won.

Turbo....there really wasnt any arguement there.

-------------------

because I will be working on this car, I dont want it to be unibody. I would greatly perfer a frame with a lightweight, detachable body.

Anybody heard of a syclone? typhoon? they are turboAWD trucks, and they are fast.

So im going with a s10 frame, add great suspension, AWD (bravada) transfer case, cheap american 5-speed transmission.

as for the motor, it got tricky. skyline/supra motors are really, really expensive. out of the question. volvo inline6 motors are also out of the question for the same reason. Yeah, you might be able to get a front clip for 4 grand from any of these cars, but replacement parts are going to kill you.

but I think I found the best/cheapest inline6 DOHC motor in the world.
it is out of the trailblazer 4.2 L. I could run a GT42R and have it spool like a DSM w/16G!!!

Here is a link for a new block and rebuilt head.

I am pretty amazed at how cheap that is, all I need to do is get a crank, rods, low compression pistons and I have a really awesome turbo motor.

as for the body of the car, I am thinking a tube cab (for safety) and fiberglass everything else, make a one piece front end, fenders, hood, bumper...all one piece. same thing for the rear of the car.

And since its on a frame, make it a hardtop convertable. I have no real HP goals, I just want this to be a fast, realible, cheap, car that I will want to drive every day.....some people with their 8 second cameros have as many total miles on their odometers as I add to my car every year.

some people daydram of supermodels all day long, I daydream of this, what do you think? what would you do differently?

P. S. I am not starting this project until I am out of college.
