Hey -
I just bought a 1992 TSI AWD and it has an Auto Trans. and it won't shift out of 2nd gear. It has no reverse, no 1st, Drive or Overdrive. Can any one help me? I think it may be a Elec problem because my A/T temp light is on every time is start it, even when the car has been sitting all night.
Thanks
- Pete

Do you have another TCU that you can swap in?

No I don't, but my thought is that since my tranny temp light is on all the time that maybe it things the trans is overheating and is like tripping a circiut or something.?.? Do you know anyone who has a TCM i could like borrow or a way to reset mine?
Pete
I bet it is in safe mode/limp mode. It thinks there is a problem and doesnt let it function like normal to help prevent further damage. You will probably need a scan tool to see what is going on with it. If you can, find another TCU to swap in just for starters.

I have a buddie that owns a Tranny shop and he hooked up his snap-on red box and couldn't even get the car to comunicate with it. And i just pulled up at my buddies house and now none of the gears work! So i don't really know what i'm going to do i think i might just order some internals from IPT and build the trans but i don't know, either that or do a manual swap.

Does anyone have a TCU that i could borrow or know where i could find/buy one? I tried some of the local yards but none of them seem to have any 92 Autos. Does it matter what year for the auto, i know with the manuals they have the whole X-fer case spline issiue, but does that TCU have to match years?

There is a place in Austin, MN that will rebuild your TCU for about $175. We had the same problem with Terina's old car. I don't remember the name right off hand, but if you do a search I'm sure you can find the old thread.
If it won't communicate with the TCU, then the TCU is fried. They did an awesome job with Terina's and we had it back in a few days I think.

yeah, I remember that thread. Search "limp mode" or safe mode and you will find it.

Right on, Thanks... I talked to Johns Auto and they did a search and found a place in austin that had a re-built one, probably the same place. Thanks again!
