Here's the story, a good buddy of mine his dad is buying a bar up in the D-town/soup town area. It's a fairly large place that used to house a pretty decent amount of people before it was repossessed from the bank. So my friend and I want to gather a list of places down in the twin cities area where are the most popular and find out for what reasons everyone goes there. Then we are going to head down there and just check it out. This may seem weird for some why I am asking this but with the size of the place and considering the other bars in the area if some good ideas were integrated into this it could be a very successful bar/nightclub for this area.

Another thing, what is one thing that draws you guys into your "regular" bar? Is it the prices? The atmosphere? Location?

Any helpful info would be great guy’s thanks!

Is it a dance club thing that might be preferred? The size of the place opens an option of a small to medium size dance floor with the possibility of making it larger. Drink specials will of course be at the top of the list. I for one think that’s a pretty large part of getting people in the door. Cover charge is up in the air yet, I personally am going to lean away from it. The guy to girl ratio in my mind depends on the theme of the place. That’s trivial either way you look at it.

I seriously want this thread to blow up, for your guys input I'll make a DSMStyle "VIP" night or whatever as payback. My buddy is going to be part owner in this with his dad so sky is the limit whatever ideas I bring to the table will be taken seriously. I don't want this to sound corny but we want to have a bar suited to what people like in popular places and throw it into this place. Sounds like a genric statement but all the bars in duluth/superior area are just plain boring. I think its time for a change.

EDIT: On a serious level, A good bar name.

Drink specials is a huge key to get people in the door at night. "all you can drink" specials, cheap drinks call drinks, etc. Another thing, don't have the rail liquors be cheap garbage, at least use some mid-level stuff that is bearable to drink without destroying your throat. As for cover charge, those don't seem to fly in the Duluth/Superior area too well so keep it low....like $1 (I am serious). Its also a great idea to have people handing out free passes/free drink cards on the sidewalks to get passersby to check it out. You definitely want to have a large dancefloor with a good DJ (not just Top 40, play some more obscure stuff too). Mixing in some house music and techno never hurts.

The place we frequent the most Downtown is definitely Barfly, its a pretty good crowd, nice atmosphere, and good drink specials (generally something going on most nights). We also hit the Annex too, but besides for their "all you can drink" special for 1 hour, that place is nothing special.

Is this the old Odyssey building? do it up right and you'll shut down Whoregate ;) If you want some help with designing or bar stuff just let me know and I can lend a hand.
