Hi guys- My Dad wants me to make a website for his business. I'm ok as far as building the website. I know FrontPage and a little Dreamweaver. Where I need help is: How do you get your newly designed website to show up on Google, Yahoo, Lycos, etc... search engines? Ideally, you want it to show up but you also want it to show up at the top of the list. Any information on what it takes would be helpful.
Thanks.

Do a search for Site Promotion. I know on google its pretty easy. i think for google you have to install google bots that grabs keywords from the site itself. Otherwise you can pay google and it will show up on the sponcered sites.
Also, I would stay the hell away from frontpage if your planning on doing a business site, stick to dreamweaver, its much better and more flexable. A good way to learn a lot about dreamweaver is going through the readme as well as going on macromedias site and watching some of the webcasts.

I've done a LITTLE website marketing. First thing to note is for a bit after your site shows up on google (most important search engine) it has something called the "sandbox effect" if I remember correctly. What this means google see's a new domain and a new site and they automatically rank it higher for about a month or so. After that time period it'll trickle down the list if it isn't optimized.
The reality of the matter is you will never be able to keep up with different rules and google changes. It's a full time job and that's why search engine optimizers make a lot of money.
So you have a choice... you can try to optimize it as much as possible by searching for current rules which is a good idea (but don't expect amazing results) and this also requires a lot of thinking about keywords and such.
Or you can use google tools and create marketing campaigns using their pay per click section. This enables you to setup a marketing campaign based off of keywords, set a monthly and or daily limit and the site will show up on the right. If done correctly I've seen great results with just 20 dollar campaigns... however it depends on how much traffic you really want and what you're competing against.
Hope this helps...
