Anybody Know A Thing Or 2 About Oldsmobiles?

ok well im just curious if anyone knows anything about Oldsmobiles. I just bought this car to be my parts getter. Well i realised the damn heater don't work. It's an 1985 Olds 98 Regency. It doesn't have knobs inside like normal cars, you instead kinda set the temp you want on this lil display (60-90 degrees) and it tries to get that hot. Anyway i don't know where to even start with this problem. I have no clue about heaters. If anyone can help then that'd be SUPER, otherwise i guess ill just have to bring her to a mechanic.

Does your engine warm up? If not, couldn't it be a bad thermostat?

It could be that the heater core is plugged up and needs replacing.

the car has no temp gauge, BUT i do drive 15 minutes to work every morning, and its not freezing outside here in Arizona. It's like 50 degrees in the morning, so id think it'd heat up in that amount of time. but i don't know how to check the engine temp when the car has no gauge. ALSO i drove about 30 minutes to this lil site today for work, and the heater still didn't work. So id guess that it would heat up by then, but if im wrong please tell me. thanx for the responce

50 degrees is more like roll down the windows and blast the music weather. Hook me up.


Start out my checking the coolant level, then the thermostat.

There should be two hoses comming from the back of the engine going through the firewall, they are relativly close togather and they are about an inch to two inches in diamater. They go to the heater core.

Heater cores are usually a bitch to get at in a lot of cars, located behind the dash and against the firewall, usually on the passenger side. If you look under the hood you'll see two coolant hoses usually close together, that are the sending and return lines for the core. I'd say the quickest and cheapest thing to do is replace the thermostat quick. If it is stuck open the car will not warm up easily since the coolant runs through the radiator then.

ya i used to think like that, but ever since i've gotten climatized to this weather, 50 degrees is sweaters on, jackets, hats, gloves, windows up with the heater on a little bit. I'm gunna die when i go back to MN. Kinda like how you'd prolly die coming here and spending a summer with noon temps around 120 degrees 5 days/week (those other 2 days might be like 100 because its cloudy). But ya i see those 2 lines you are talkin about. They go through the firewall on the passenger side. I guess ill swap in a new thermostat on friday. and if it doesn't fix it, ill check out the heater core on saturday.

Its not uncommon for the climate control modules to go bad in those cars.Does the air blowing change(temp, sound, etc.) at all when you change the temp on the display?
