Well, yesterday I was driving doing a hard 2-3 shift (F body in the lane next to me) and there was no 3rd gear. I'm guessing the tranny is junked and due for a rebuild but, thought I'd see if anyone could diagnose just knowing that. 3rd is now a vast emptyness from the side of 1st over to 5th. Seems as though all I can get is 5th and I cant get it out of it either. This is on a '95 awd Talon for reference. Any ideas whether its a shift fork, or somthing else? I checked the linkage and they are still attached on the top of the tranny.

Holy fuck. I think you effed it bad man. The only thing I can think of is you broke the gear itself and a piece of 3rd gear is maybe holding it in 5th. I dont know much about trannies but it could be a shift fork too. Either way I think its time to pull that beast.
You broke a shift fork. Not a huge deal, but you do have to take the tranny apart.

I dont think you know what your talking about really. There is no way you can really get a chunk out of 3rd gear, into 5th as there is a plate that seperates 5th and reverse from all the other gears. He has a broken shift fork for sure. Take the tranny out and apart and put a new one in and slap it back in.

I dont think you know what your talking about really. You are absolutely right! I've never had a tranny apart, or even seen on apart in person or in pictures. But I do remember reading about a guy that had stripped a couple teeth off a gear (3rd I believe) and the teeth were crunching around in there afterwards. My tranny illiterate brain thought that the gear itself broke into a bunch of pieces and they were now just floating around getting things stuck. My bad.

Finally made it back to check on it... I dont think it is stuck in 5th anymore. I can start it up fine, as soon as I let off a little on the clutch it stalls out, not like it wants to pully forward at all. Then, while off or running with the clutch pushed in, it wont roll forward or backward at all. I had made it home in gear but I'm starting to wonder now if somthing else broke and is in the way of shifting.
Either way, the tranny is comming out and I'm debating about Archer doing a rebuild on it. I would like somthing to hold up but I find it hard to justify around $2000 for a tranny. Any recomendations from people and what they have and what they would recommend would be great.
Send it off to Shep for a rebuild. WAY cheaper than Archer.
Shift rail broke not the fork.
