Looks like a cheap-ass powdered aluminum backing plate.

OOH! Free port job on the compressor cover!

Any chance that thing is under warranty? Seems like it was off balance.

Did you happen to purchase this from XS Power?

Maybe its just do to the compressor housing being too large and it doesnt look like the backing is very thick.
This would be awesome to do a scan with my companys Vibrometers to see what kind of vibrations were coming out of that turbo before it blew. http://www.polytec.com

Fuck no... I already know about their products. I would never purchase a turbo from them or any other similar company.

It seemed like the turbo was built properly. The backing plate is fairly thick. I just dont understand why it came apart like it did. I think it blew out then took the compressor wheel with it otherwise I highly doubt it would have made 26psi or blown up like it did. When it blew, I think the compressor wheel shattered when it hit the compressor housing at 75,000+ rpms. Who knows.

How is your piping from the turbo to the FMIC? is it rigid? and how are your engine mounts i saw the car twisting a lot damn.. could it be puting the strain on the compressor housing from morot moving and frame twisting the oposite direction and puting a lot of strain on the IC piping ...

having that many same failures on same car usualy indicates something.

Actually it was 2 different cars/motors and everything. The other turbo that fucked up was on my GST and the exhaust wheel (shaft) kept breaking. Wasnt a BOV issue either. It was like the wheel was melting off.

This turbo, the backing plate blew out and took the compressor wheel with it.

The motor mounts are poly, lower intercooler pipe is loose so it couldnt have cause any strain on it I wouldnt think. The only thing it is attached to is the FMIC and the compressor housing.
