Is there such a thing as a low cost carpet shampooer which would work well for auto upholstry? I don't want something super fancy or even that rigid, just something which would work well around home for cleaning cars. I looked on this (http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/steam-cleaners/fullstory.html) review website and unless I'm completely blind, everything described as portable and low cost is also rated as complete junk.

My mom has a Bissel steam cleaner that looks like a regular vacuum cleaner only larger. It only cost a few hundred dollars and has all the little attatchments for doing small areas such as cars. I'm am not sure if this qualifies as "low-cost", but it works wonders on car interiors, household carpeting, furniture, etc.

We used to use a brand new hand-held Bissell steam cleaner about 13 years ago for this exact same thing. It never worked that great. The easiest way to shampoo car interiors is to spray the carpets and seats(if they're cloth) with a mild degreaser. Let it sit for about five minutes, then take some hot soapy water and a scrub brush and scrub the interior, use lots of water, don't be shy. When you're done with that, simply wet-vac it out and let it dry with the windows open or a big fan. You need a good wet vac, I use a big-ass Home Depot one. I also use a large industrial fan to dry it.
