Hey guys, its been awhile since i was on here... my name is josh. I have a question about my engine running seeminly high at 65 mph +. If i were to get a cold air intake installed on my car, would it make my engine take less of an ass kickin at higher speeds? would it possibly help my gas mileage? ( i usually get 25 -30 65 and under, but i get approxamitly 15-20 at 65+) Any help would be appreciated .. thank you

We need to know what you've done to your car first. K&N air filters do wonders for breathability. Also do a tune up including a new fuel filter. Could be more involved but at least that stuff id taken care of. Remember, when troubleshooting, always eliminate the easy stuff first.

Adding mods is not going to change your MPH vs RPM. Gearing is gearing. The only time it would change is if your clutch is slipping badly.

Sorry. I realized that he was talking rpm's after I posted.
I guess I haven't really looked at my tach while I'm driving down the freeway. My suggestion would be to shift into 5th.....

thanks for the help, there is no modding on this car. Its going to be my winter car when i get a 2g. The clutch is slipping bad. Im replacing that when i get my tax returns. Its just a base model 1g eclipse. Im not so worried about the numbers on the tach.. im just worried that its beating the crud outta my engine. So basically would bringing in more/ colder air reduce the beating on my engine? I have yet to do a full tune up. I plan on doing that right after the clutch.. likely at the same time. thank you very much guys
poor flywheel... at leas its staying nice and warm

If the clutch is slipping you WILL use more fuel. I'm seeing that right now too. Mine only slips at higher boost in lower gears. I just baby it to keep it from slipping until I can get to work on the clutch.
If this car is going to be a winter beater/spare car, you probably don't have to go with a cold air intake. It would be a costly modification that probably won't be worth it. Just get a K&N filter, open up your air can a little and tune up the engine. As long as it's a decent engine, it should be allright.

well put it this way. I know some ppl. Im getting an almost new AEM intake piping for 20 bucks. And hes installing it for me.. so its really not costly.. the filter is gonna cost more than the intake lol. what did you mean about that flywheel. i didnt get it. lol im sorta slow i guess?

3400 rpm at 70mph is damn near where it should be on a NT 1G.

Yep, that's where it should be. I'd hardly call 4K rpms below redline winding the motor out. It might just sound that way if your exhaust has a big hole in it. If you want low rpm cruising, get a six-speed Vette.
