A few days ago I had a spark plug blow out of the head on my 99 F-250 5.4l. I was like WTF this shouldnt happen. Needles to say I was pissed. I did some online searching and found out this is a huge problem that happens in 97 - 02 ford Triton motors. Ford refuses to step up and take responsibillity for the problem. Most dealers will only offer replacing the head as a repair. But I have found a dealer to put in a thread insert for $500.

Is there any ford mechanics out there that would have access to the tools needed for this repair, and could do it for me. I have a few friends that work for non ford dealers that are trying to help me out but the tools are almost $500 so I'm leaning towards haveing ford do it for me.

Heres some interesting links on the subject.

Yup I know several people that this has happened to. The thread insert seems to be the most popular fix, if it is still doable. Totally shitty problem, and just another reason I'll never buy a Ford.

This is a nationwide problem, happens to a TON of 5.4L engines. This is one of the reasons the Ford GT was recalled.

It sux. I'm planning on trading it in as soon as its fixed. I need at least one reliable car. I was actually thinking about driving the car this week. But horsepower fwd and winter dont mix.

I could of sworn that Ford had a recall about 1.5 yrs ago for this problem. Maybe I read the article incorrectly.

I've seen this problem on two seperate Chevy Blazers belonging to friends within 3 months of eachother, so I wouldn't say it's just Ford.

This is a problem with all the modular engines, 5.4 and 4.6. Remember to use plenty of Never Seize on the threads or they will come out with the spark plug.

Happened to my uncle on his Lincoln Towncar as well. He mentioned something about cop cars having to have this checked regularly because their engines suffer from this as well.

It happens on the Ford V10s as well. A former co-worker of mine had it happen and as soon as it was clustered back together, the truck was traded off.
